Statistics

Issues with water cleanliness in different environments:

  • On human health:

    • 1.8 Million deaths in 2015

    • Unsafe water sickens about 1 billion people

    • The low-income community are at a higher risk because homes are often the closest to the most polluting industries

    • Waterborne pathogens are a major cause of illness from contaminated water

    • Children and pregnant woman are particularly at risk

    • 3.5 million Americans contract health issues (rashes, pink eye, respiratory infections, hepatitis etc.)

    • Chemicals can get into sediments and impact large coastal areas

  • On the environment:

    • healthy environments need a "complex web of animals" in which all interact directly and indirectly with each other

    • When algal blooms happen in water in the water it causes dead zones. This causes neurotoxins that affect wildlife from whales to sea turtles.

Environments where human power filtration systems make sense:

  • Natural Disaster areas

  • Low-Income communities

  • Developing countries

  • Areas faraway from water sources
